Lacquerous Review: LVX

image

Here at Lacquerous, we are always on the lookout for new lacquers to add to our growing inventory. We figured it would be a great idea to test out some brands and let our dear readers know how they perform. As Lacquerous’ social media intern, I’ve been tasked to test out these lacquers and I couldn’t be more excited! The first brand I have tested is LVX Nail Lacquer. LVX (pronounced lux) is a top-quality, vegan, cruelty-free brand that is fashion forward and always on trend. Not only are their lacquers beautiful, but they are also 5-free, ensuring that you can get a great manicure without having to deal with harsh chemicals.

image

The first shade I tried is Viridian. Emerald green is Pantone’s Color of the Year and this shade is perfect for spring! Viridian is one of the best emerald lacquers I’ve ever tried. This cream polish goes on smoothly and is nearly 100% opaque with just one coat. I painted two coats to make sure I had even coverage. I’m so impressed with Viridian! The color is so vibrant and the formula is not streaky at all. I wore it for 5 days and frequently found myself staring at my hand. There was no chipping and only minor tip wear.

image

The second shade I tested is Fantom. White lacquer is notorious for being streaky and inconsistent, and I rarely wear it by itself. Like Viridian, Fantom’s formula is smooth and very opaque. Two coats are enough to cover my nails completely. This is the best white lacquer I have ever worn. Aside from a few bubbles, my nails look clean and chic. After 5 days, my nails look as good as they did on day 1!

I also tried the LVX 3-in-1 Treatment, which is a basecoat, topcoat and strengthener all in one. I love this treatment because it made my nails so shiny! The formula is not too thick and lacquer adheres to it well. It works best as a topcoat because of the amazing shine.

Luxury Lacquer Stands Out in Spring Haute Couture Collections

It’s official: lacquer has become fashion’s hottest accessory! During the elite Spring 2013 Haute Couture week, manicures took center stage along side the amazing fashion. Some designers chose simple lacquer to enhance their designs, while others went in a bolder direction.

The luxurious Armani Privé collection, filled with bright colors and geometric patterns, was accented by dark plum nails.

Chanel’s dramatic collection featured plenty of feathers, lace and jewels. Models wore Emprise, from the Precieux Printemps du Chanel collection on their fingers and a navy lacquer on their toes.

Any look from the Dior collection is perfectly crafted for a spring garden party. In terms of beauty, jewel-encrusted lips stood out while pale lacquer complemented the pastel color palette.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s wild collection, inspired in part by Gypsies, featured bold red and silver glitter nails, with some models’ feet painted orange and silver.

White lacquer perfectly complemented the beautiful organza and whimsical embroidery in the romantic Valentino collection.

Welcome to Lacquerous! “Netflix For Nails” has arrived!

The day has come: Lacquerous has finally gone live! Now you have access to a fabulous inventory of luxury lacquers that are available to try without having to buy.

Thanks to Refinery 29 for breaking the story yesterday. Check out what they had to say, along with others.

“We love this idea — access to designer-ready digits without having to shell out $30 for a single polish? Genius. We’ve rarely, if ever, used an entire bottle of polish in our lives — usually we get halfway down and they start getting all tacky and hard to use, so we just chuck them. This gives you the opportunity to try the latest shades, without the commitment or the hefty price tag. And, for those of you germaphobes worried about shared polish being unsanitary, remember that the polishes you use at the nail salon are just that: communal, meaning lots of other people have used them. Not to mention the fact that nail polish manufacturers have to make sure that their lacquers are safe despite how many people are using them, meaning that polish is not a cesspool of icky bacteria, thank you very much.” ~Refinery 29

In this anti-ownership era, anyone one can have anything for a limited time only. We bike share, Zipcar, and Netflix our way through the day without having to sign anything permanent. Websites like Rent the Runway and Bag Borrow or Steal allow a tenuous hold on whatever the heart desires (within company-defined limits). Lacquerous, a brand-new nail polish sharing company, combines the rental aspect of Rent the Runway with the subscription model of Birchbox, to allow any girl to dip her nails into a variety of luxury polishes for a flat rate of $18 a month. ~ TIME Style

The most common question we receive is naturally about hygiene. Yep, we’ve heard it all! The fact is that, as microbiologists confirm, no fungus, bacteria, microbe or anything living can survive in a bottle of nail polish. At Lacquerous, bottles are sealed for at least 1 day in transit and we inspect all bottles received. The truth is, whether we want to admit it or not, we all take a risk when sharing makeup at a department store or eating from a salad bar or touching a handrail.. If you are germaphobe, then sadly this probably isn’t for you.

Some of the other common questions we’ve been getting are: What if I use to much? Will I get a new bottle everytime?  The answer is, much like a club, it’s about sharing the product. We provide an experience to our members to try luxury lacquer. We’ll never send you anything that isn’t Instagram worthy ;) All we ask is that you stick to the guidelines as close as possible and we’ll make sure you will enjoy being a part of Lacquerous. We’re less like Big Brother and a lot more like a big sister! All these questions are answered on the website too.

Now, for the fun part! What colors do you want to try? You can email Lacquerous while you are waiting! Here are some of the designer brands already available:

Butter London

Chanel

Deborah Lippmann

Dior

Dolce & Gabbana

Fall Lacquer Collections

Summer is officially over, but there’s so much to look forward to this fall! We are anticipating cooler temperatures, cozier fashion and holidays but most of all, fall lacquers! Many amazing collections are about to be released in the next few months. Here are some of our favorites!

One of the collections we are most excited about is NARS x Andy Warhol. Inspired by the iconic pop artist, this collection features 6 Technicolor lacquers. These vibrant polishes will be available October 1 as a part of the NARS x Andy Warhol Color Collection.

Essential items created by Coco Chanel inspire Chanel’s fall collection, Les Essentiels. The little black dress, the quilted handbag, and two-toned shoes are muses for the soft color palette of grey, fuchsia and black.

The Dior Golden Jungle Collection features 3 lacquers inspired by a jungle motif, one of Dior’s signature themes. A khaki green crocodile leather effects polish joins a shimmery gold and a reddish brown lacquer in this earth-toned collection.

According to Tom Ford, his fall lacquers “have a twist of the perverse to them.” Minx, a dark bronze, and Dominatrix, a smoky purple, are edgy, dramatic lacquers perfect for fall.

Celebrating 50 Years of Dior Vernis

One of our favorite luxury lacquer brands here at Lacquerous is Dior Vernis. In 1962 Christian Dior became the first haute couture design house to create and market its own nail polish. An appropriate summation of Dior Vernis comes from one of its first slogans: “Today, the four shimmering letters of Dior have come to the tips of your ten fingers.”

Fifty years later, Dior Vernis reigns supreme as one of the best lacquers available. To celebrate, Dior Beauty hosted a dinner party attended by some of fashion’s finest. Artist Holton Rower, famous for his psychedelic pour paintings, gave a live demonstration of his craft using popular Dior Vernis shades. Many of his paintings were on display at the event, emphasizing the idea that Dior Vernis is all about color.

Luxury vs. Drugstore

With the rising popularity of nail polish in the beauty industry, it’s only natural that the range of nail polish and nail products available has increased vastly. Some consumers prefer drugstore polishes that are inexpensive and readily available. It’s understandable; we’d love to have the chance to change our nail color to match our outfits. But while luxury lacquers can be pricey, some of the benefits of choosing a high-end polish far outweigh the cost.

Unlike fashion, most mass nail products can in fact do the basic job of larger brands. So why would someone invest $18 or more in a bottle?

Brands like Chanel, Dior, and Butter London offer products of the highest quality to ensure that the lacquers are not only smooth and long lasting, but also safe. Many drugstore polishes can contain toxic chemicals like dibutyl phthalate, toluene and formaldehyde, which are used to prevent chips and make the lacquer last longer. Luxury lacquers are also heavily pigmented, resulting in a rich formula that lasts longer and goes on smoother.

Drugstore brands attempt to compete with designers by creating similar colors. But the fashion world has a head start here—they seem to be getting more savvy by matching nail colors with their collections, and releasing colors ahead of schedule to capitalize on the fashion industry’s marketing machine.

Lacquerous members get to try luxury brands and wear them before deciding whether to purchase. This is one way to beat the cost and ensure you are certain of the color and polish quality. It also allows you to experience different brands and continue to wear the latest shades in luxury lacquer. The most important thing is that you, as the consumer, are informed of what you are buying and using.

In beauty, as in fashion, it’s always a mix of high and low.
