Lacquerous Review: Wet Paint

The latest brand I’ve been able to test is Wet Paint. This line was created by celebrity nail stylist Julia Palmer, who wanted to produce a line of lacquers with vivid colors that mimic precious gemstones. Wet Paint offers a nail glaze system that boasts one coat coverage and 60-second drying time. Their enamel technology provides a unique glaze on the nail. Their lacquers are labeled either Base or SPFX. Bases can be worn alone or underneath the SPFX topcoats, which completely change the look of the Base color.

I first tried the Base color Crimson & Clover. This deep, rich oxblood shade is gorgeous and right on trend. The formula is smooth and has the perfect thickness. It truly covers the nail well with just one coat, but I painted on two coats just to be safe. This color dries much darker than it looks in the bottle, but I’m happy with the darker shade. I feel like it makes my nails look longer!

Next I tried the SPFX topcoat Fructoes by itself. This color is an iridescent pale pink with a pearl finish. It’s a very pretty color, but I don’t think I would wear it alone. As you can see from the photo, it doesn’t stand out on its own as much as I would have hoped.

Finally, I applied Fructoes on top of Crimson & Clover. It changed the Base from a dark, sleek oxblood to a shiny mauve. Fructoes work so beautifully as a topcoat! I think that once coat of each would be sufficient because any more than 4 coats would look way too heavy. I love that with just two lacquers you can have three completely different looks, depending on your mood!

May Lacqueen: Rihanna

image

Our celebrity Lacqueen for the month of May is Rihanna! Forget about whether she’s with Chris Brown for a second, her consistency with cutting-edge style and matching nails deserves an applaud. Her nail game is frankly insane. Rihanna is launching a collection with MAC Cosmetics this summer and we can’t wait to see the lacquer shades she has created. We love Riri for her fearless attitude, amazing style and killer manicures! Let’s take a closer look…

Early in her career, Rihanna wore a lot of interesting nail art. She has rocked a fun smiley face manicure, Obama nails and money-inspired nail art.

image

image

image

Lately, RiRi has been wearing less nail art in favor of long talon nails and bold lacquer shades. She wore a gorgeous red orange polish custom-made by her manicurist Kimmie Kyees that matched her vintage Alaïa gown at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

image

Kyees even painted a sweet Tiffany blue color on her nails while on a moving tour bus!

image

Right now RiRi is a fan of bright colors, like this great bubblegum pink lacquer.

Trend to Try: Textured Nails

We’re always on the lookout for the hottest trends in nail art and lately it seems that the nail industry is all about experimentation. From extra long talon nails to wild, colorful nail art, nail enthusiasts aren’t afraid to go crazy with their manicures. The latest wild nail art trend we love is textured lacquer! Here are some of the different ways to get some texture on your nails.

Ciate Chalkboard Manicure

Ciate is the leading brand when it comes to texture. Their innovative ideas include their caviar, velvet and foil manicure kits. Ciate’s latest creation is the chalkboard manicure kit. This kit includes black chalkboard paint, a matte topcoat and four chalk pens. The chalk pens are water-soluble so you can doodle as much as you like and easily wash off your designs with water.

China Glaze Texture Collection

For their Texture collection, China Glaze created a line of neon shades. These lacquers go on smooth like a crème, but dry matte and coarse for a cool 3D effect.

Nails Inc. Denim & Studs Kit

Thanks to Nails Inc., you can wear your jeans on your nails! This glossy indigo polish dries matte to resemble your favorite pair of jeans. The kit includes star-shaped studs to add some bling to your nails.

Nails Inc. Feathers

Nails Inc. is once again on trend with their Feather Effects collection. The lacquer is filled with tiny fibers that blend together to create a quill effect on your nails.

Deborah Lippmann Mermaid Collection

Just in time for summer, Deborah Lippmann’s latest collection contains 5 stunning shades inspired by the sea. These lacquers dry glossy but slightly textured so if you want to try the texture trend without going overboard, these are the perfect choice!

OPI Liquid Sand

Starting with their Mariah Carey lacquers, OPI has released several Liquid Sand shades with each new collection. Liquid Sand dries matte and has a hint of glitter for some fantastic shine.

Lacquerous Review: LVX

image

Here at Lacquerous, we are always on the lookout for new lacquers to add to our growing inventory. We figured it would be a great idea to test out some brands and let our dear readers know how they perform. As Lacquerous’ social media intern, I’ve been tasked to test out these lacquers and I couldn’t be more excited! The first brand I have tested is LVX Nail Lacquer. LVX (pronounced lux) is a top-quality, vegan, cruelty-free brand that is fashion forward and always on trend. Not only are their lacquers beautiful, but they are also 5-free, ensuring that you can get a great manicure without having to deal with harsh chemicals.

image

The first shade I tried is Viridian. Emerald green is Pantone’s Color of the Year and this shade is perfect for spring! Viridian is one of the best emerald lacquers I’ve ever tried. This cream polish goes on smoothly and is nearly 100% opaque with just one coat. I painted two coats to make sure I had even coverage. I’m so impressed with Viridian! The color is so vibrant and the formula is not streaky at all. I wore it for 5 days and frequently found myself staring at my hand. There was no chipping and only minor tip wear.

image

The second shade I tested is Fantom. White lacquer is notorious for being streaky and inconsistent, and I rarely wear it by itself. Like Viridian, Fantom’s formula is smooth and very opaque. Two coats are enough to cover my nails completely. This is the best white lacquer I have ever worn. Aside from a few bubbles, my nails look clean and chic. After 5 days, my nails look as good as they did on day 1!

image

I also tried the LVX 3-in-1 Treatment, which is a basecoat, topcoat and strengthener all in one. I love this treatment because it made my nails so shiny! The formula is not too thick and lacquer adheres to it well. It works best as a topcoat because of the amazing shine.

The weather is heating up and we are so ready for summer style. We can’t wait to say goodbye to our dark fall lacquers and say hello to fun, bright shades. The May issues of our favorite magazines are just hitting the shelves and we’ve found the best editorials featuring fabulous manicures. Some are still sticking to fall lacquer trends, but most of them are as ready for summery shades as we are!

For Vault Magazine’s sultry Belle de Jour editorial, manicurist Cassandra Lamar used oxblood polish to complement the rich, jewel-toned color palette.

The French manicure is always on trend and this season many people are playing around with the classic style.

Vladi_07’s mismatched French mani is so fun! Laura_ahn used the sparkly Deborah Lippmann Happy Birthday on her tips. Arielalaib topped Deborah Lippmann Waking Up in Vegas with a silver Sally Hansen lacquer for a cool geometric look.

Polka dots have been seen a lot on the spring runways and they make for an easy nail art technique to recreate.

Misturinhachic used several different Dior Vernis shades to create a colorful, Easter egg-inspired manicure. Crimsonlovesyou topped Butter London Lady Muck with Royal Navy dots and a matte topcoat. Mixing royal blue Dior Blue Denim and Essie No Place Like Chrome created a stellar manicure for Fraise_chocolat.

Leopard print adds dimension to your manicure, whether you are rocking it on all of your nails or just as an accent design.

April Lacqueen: Jessica Biel

image

Our Lacqueen for the month of April is… Jessica Biel! From the red carpet to the covers of magazines, Mrs Timberlake holds her own and inspires us with our nail game. Her style is modest yet elegant and her lacquer choices are anything but safe. With her Old Hollywood glamour, and occasional subtle nail art, Jessica is hard to ignore and easy to love. Check out our fave pics and look for more as we focus on our latest celebrity Lacqueen.

For the January 2013 cover of Elle, her cherry red nails added a bright pop of color to a gorgeous black and white embellished Dior dressimage

In a 2010 campaign for Revlon, Jessica channeled Dorian Leigh’s iconic 1952 Fire & Ice ad in a slinky silver gown and ruby manicure. Stunning.

image

Her red carpet manicures stand out the most. For the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, she accented a stark white Chanel dress with a pearlescent mauve manicure.

image

At the Total Recall premiere last year, Jessica had the blogs buzzing with a light pink Giambattista Valli dress and an asymmetrical pink and silver French manicure.

image

For the Hitchcock premiere in Los Angeles, Jessica’s oxblood nails were given a twist with thin gold stripes across the tips.

image

The movie also premiered in New York, where she matched her frosty caviar manicure to her beaded Oscar de la Renta ensemble.

“Nail”-ing the Stars: Kimmie Kyees

image

Right now, nail art is at the height of its popularity. Because of that, celebrity manicurists are becoming almost as well known as their star-studded clientele. One of our favorite celeb manicurists is Kimmie Kyees. Her work has been seen on countless red carpets and in high fashion editorials. Kyees’ clients include Rihanna. Adele, Katy Perry, Jessica Alba, the Kardashian sisters and many more.

image

It’s hard to look at a magazine, album cover or music video without seeing Kyee’s nail art. Her nails have been featured in over 50 publications, including Elle, InStyle, Cosmopolitan and Vogue. Kyees has also created amazing nails for iconic music videos like Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, Rihanna’s Umbrella and Britney Spears’ Circus.

image

image

We chose Kimmie Kyees as our very first interview on our blog because her work is always pushing boundaries. Whether she’s adorning nails with hundreds of tiny crystals or lace appliques, creating custom gel shades, or customizing her own line of Minx nails, Kyees is always ahead of the trends.

image

We asked Kyees a few questions to get some advice as well as the scoop on her creative process. Here’s what she had to say:

Do most of your clients come to you with ideas or do they let you have creative control when it comes to their nails?

It’s a collaboration were inspired by colors, make up, patterns, backdrops even Instagram and new trends in manicuring products. Sometimes I will make samples of a bunch of different kinds of ideas and they will choose 1 or mix and match it’s great to have a visual to be able to see…. it’s a lot of fun.

I know you work a lot with Red Carpet Manicure Gel Polish. Which luxury lacquer brands are you a fan of?

I really use so many different products. I like industry staples like Gelish, OPI, Orly and Zoya, Bellissima and Entity.  I also like cosmetic lines like NARS, MAC and even CoverGirl.

image

What advice do you have for people attempting to do nail art at home?

My first advice is to buy Milani precision art brush it’s the best for making stripes in line. Also doing nail art on top of gel is super forgiving because you can wipe it away if you mess up and it will not ruin the gel… then you can top coat either with polish or gel top coat once it’s finished.

Who is your dream client?

My dream clients use to be P!nk and Adele and in the last couple years I was blessed enough to get to work with both of those wonderful women… so I think now my dream clients would be legends like Tina Turner or Cher!
